Cesar Velasco

Creative Producer

Cesar has been working with Backstory since 2019, and for anyone who has met him, he is easily the most iniviting person I (John) have ever met. Over the recent years he has carved out a name for himself as a producer in Austin, TX while building up a portfolio for his long term vision as a Director. We’re excited to officially have Cesar as a part of our day-to-day team and grow the future of Backstory with him as a critical leader.
I asked Cesar what he would want to share about his time cominig up in the industry and living abroad and this is what he had to share:

I was born and raised in Mexico City up until the age of ten. My family then relocated to Toronto, Canada before finally arriving in Texas, U.S.A at the age of sixteen. When I was 8 years old, I had the pleasure of seeing my first, real Television production. I had become obsessed that year with recreating famous Hollywood movies with my friends using my parent’s Hi8 Mini DV camera, a camera I still use to this day.

With a clear interest in the world of entertainment, my father opened an opportunity for me to audition for a cable Access TV show in Mexico City. The concept was simple: for a segment of a 30 minute Sport recap show, they would have a child interviewer ask questions to some of Mexico’s most famous athletes. I was meant for this.

After a morning of anxiousness I nailed my audition and soon enough it was time for my first taping, at one of Mexico’s biggest training facilities for PUMAS UNAM, one of the city’s biggest clubs. My camera operator showed up, I had never seen a camera that big, with so many lights, and adults surrounding me. This wasn’t one of my backyard productions and I felt out of my element.

My camera operator on this day I will never forget. He cared for me, and in my anxiety made sure that I felt like it was just him and I working, without all the noise surrounding us. We finished the day, and before he left, he pulled me aside and he told me; “A life behind the camera is a really beautiful one, but an incredibly difficult one”.

In the moments where the day gets hard, I remember this. We live such an exciting life in video production and it excites every ounce of me to bring a creative to life through film. This is the world I have always known, and the world I love. It is such a privilege to join a team that shares my excitement for production and creativity, and I look forward to many projects together!
