Music as the backbone

Michael Jackson once said “Everything living has a rhythm. Can you feel that music?”

At Backstory, we strive to feel the music life is giving us. We approach the musical side of video production just as intentionally as the visuals. Everything we create has a natural rhythm. A pace and mood that is intentionally established. Our job is to be able to identify that tone with music to elevate the potential. To embrace what is naturally occurring and complement it with our productions. Visually and audibly.

We almost always find ourselves thinking through the music and pace of a video in pre-production. The music and rhythm of a piece is a critical backbone to understanding what should be constructed around it. Rather than fighting the natural direction a script is headed – we embrace the opportunity to make everything musical. The camera movements. The editing transitions. The voiceover. Anything to show the natural rhythm already occurring in every aspect of human life.

What you hear is more often than not the largest factor in your willingness to consume content.

We as filmmakers and content producers have been given the responsibility to use music as a tool. To use it effectively and properly. To immerse a viewer into a world we have created that ebbs and flows just as one should expect. To complement the pace of life and enhance the reality that has been created. Music isn’t the only piece of a production, but it is certainly one that can’t be overlooked.

And that’s why we view music as the backbone.
